The wide cross-section tunnels or galleries are driven by hewing two adjacent parts of the cross-section. The hewn material is carried away by a loading device. The two cross-section parts (A,B) are alternately hewn and lined. One part, in which lining is in progress, is sealed off, up to the rock face (3), from the part where hewing is in progress. Lining work is always undertaken in one part while hewing is taking place in the other. A seal (2) may be advanced between the parts, as required. This can be a flexible curtain, from roof (4) to floor (5), pref. 25% longer than the hewing machine (1). (First major country equivalent to AT8202591)
