PURPOSE:To attain excellent gradation recording and to improve the resolution expressing force by executing the recording according to the picture element constituting dot number and recording the dot number in a picture element specified by a density gradation step designated by a recording signal. CONSTITUTION:The picture constitution dot number A is selected as 36 till a half of the low densities 19-steps of gradation step numbers 0-18, that is, till the step 9, and the recording dot number B is selected as 1-9 and the B/A is selected as 1/36-9/36. Steps 10-18 at the remaining high density side are divided into further a half, the B/A of the half at the low density is constituted to be 5 steps as 5/16-9/16 and an intermediate value 16 is selected for the picture element constitution dot number. The remaining highest density is constituted as 9-dot per one picture element, the B/A is constituted to be 4-step of 6/9-9/9 so as to correct the tendency of the saturated density difference and the picture element constitution dot number is decreased to improve the resolution. As the curve #4 as the result, a nearly equal slope is obtained over the entire gradation step and the well-balanced density gradation distribution is obtained.
