The axle unit for motor vehicles has a differential housing (1) connected by a half shaft (4) to a wheel hub unit (5), comprising a planetary gearing (12) in an enclosed oil filled casing (10) which rotates on the axle housing (3). An oil sealer ring (21) is between the shaft (4) and the axle housing (3). The axle housing is provided with a breather opening (20) in the differential area. To allow the hub unit (5) to breathe, the half shaft has an axial bore (23) which opens into the differential housing (1), in which is a breather hole (24) connecting the hub with the axle housing breather (20). This improves the lubrication of hub and differential.
