In a saw chain which can be completely sharpened from outside, the top sides of the saw teeth are sharpened from above and the side faces are sharpened from the outside. The chain has left-hand and right-hand cutting teeth, of which each has a top plate which drops away to the rear and downwards and is connected at a side edge to a side plate inclined to the rear and inwards. Further components of the teeth are a twisted neck, a body and a depth limiter, the top plate, the side plate and the neck generally having a C-shaped configuration. At its top side, the top plate has a sharpenable surface which forms a top cutting edge and runs out in a corner; a lateral slit edge leads downwards and to the rear from this corner, which slit edge is formed by a sharpenable top edge on the side plate. The top plate is sharpened by a sharpening attachment which can be fastened to the tip of the guide rail on which the chain rotates. Fixed in the attachment is a flexible strip of an abrasive material which is pressed against the top plate of the saw chain. In addition, a pair of lateral sharpening elements are contained in the attachment, the abrasive surfaces of which sharpening elements are pressed by springs against the side parts.
