In scraper arms with conventional clearing devices, the scraper plates are held on their carrier immovably about the longitudinal axis of the carrier in a vertical plane. With all excavation methods that require a sidewards movement of the scraper arm and its scraper plates into the material, the scraper plates undergo unilateral loads and a non-uniform wear of their cutting edge, with the result that bearings and guides of the scraper plate carrier are also subjected to unilateral loads. A new scraper plate holder is proposed, which substantially eliminates the harmful unilaterial loads. It is characterised by the fact that the scraper plates are disposed so as to be pivotable about an axis extending in the direction of movement of their carrier. Here the scraper plate carrier may be either of stiff or flexible design and holders are provided at intervals on said carrier, to which the scraper plates are fastened, in the case of a flexible carrier the longitudinal axis of said carrier forming the pivot axis of the scraper plates, in the case of a rigid carrier on the other hand each holder having an axis that is axially parallel to the carrier, which axis receives the scraper plate allocated to it and forms its pivot axis.
