The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for driving roadways or tunnels of large cross-section by shearing two adjacent cross-sectional parts A and B of the entire cross-section to be excavated, the sheared material being transported away via a loading device of the shearing machine. The two adjacent cross-sectional parts A and B are sheared and supported alternately; the cross-sectional part B or A in which the support work is carried out is closed off up to the heading face (3) from the cross-sectional part A or B in which the shearing work is carried out, and the support work is carried out in one cross-sectional part during the shearing in the other respective cross-sectional part. The two cross-sectional parts A and B are closed off from one another by a flexible curtain (2) which extends to the roof (4) and floor (5) and to the heading face (3) and the length of which corresponds to at least the length of the shearing machine (1) and preferably projects beyond the length of the shearing machine (1) by about 25%.
