PURPOSE:To improve driving performance, by a method wherein a transfer shaft and a viscous coupling are transmitted to the one of front and rear wheels through an engaging clutch in four positions for direct coupling, and are transmitted to the other of the front and rear wheels through an engaging clutch in four positions for direct coupling - free to provide three kinds of 4-wheel drives or FR 2-wheel drives. CONSTITUTION:When a rail 48 is controlled to an R direct coupling 4WD posi tion, a clutch 40 is shifted to the viscous coupling side, and a clutch 45 to the direct coupling side to provide 4-wheel drive through rear wheel direct coupling front wheel viscous coupling. When to an FR direct coupling 4WD position, the clutch 40 is shifted to the direct coupling side to provide front rear wheel direct coupling drive. When to an F direct 4WD coupling position, the clutch 40 is shifted to the viscous coupling side to provide drive through front wheel direct coupling rear wheel viscous coupling. Further, when to an FF position, the clutch 45 is brought into a free state to provide 2-wheel drive of F and F. This constitution improves drivability.
