The manufacture is preferably carried out by removal of chips, and to this effect the workpiece (1) rotates about a fixed axis with a constant speed, while the tool (13) is guided along a closed path. The rotation speed of the workpiece (1) is independent of the peripheral speed of the tool (13) along its path, while the tool (13) travelling along its path has a continuous action on the workpiece (1). The peripheral speed of the tool (13) is modified during one full revolution depending on the rotation speed of the workpiece (1), the path of the tool (13) and the desired polygonal profile. The tool is guided along a cylindrical path, preferably with a translation motion.
