摘要 PURPOSE:To facilitate highly efficient light path junction with optical fibers, by forming an optical waveguide thickened at the junction ends and an impurity layer serving as a heat generating material, at the path or its ends, and changing refractive index in accordance with temp. CONSTITUTION:A crystal of LiNbO3 is used as a base 1, thick Ti films 11 and a thin Ti film 12 are vapor deposited to the base 1 at the junction ends of the parts of the optical waveguide to be formed and both ends, respectively, using a photoresist. This base 1 is heated to about 1,000 deg.C in a diffusion furnace to form the optical waveguide 2 with the Ti film 12 and to form a heat generating material with the remaining Ti 11 at both ends of junctions. Heat dispersion is carried out in an inert gas atmosphre to prevent oxidation of Ti. Current is allowed to flow from a power supply 14 through the junction ends to raise temp. of the base 1 and refraction index of these parts, thus enlarging the openings of the optical waveguide 2 facing the cores of optical fibers 3 and permitting efficient junction of the light paths.
