A hitch mouth (4) on a trailer unit (2) is connectable to the tractor by a pivot. At the side of the trailer are left and right hand hydraulic jacking cylinders (7), with the upper end of the cylinder (9) connected to the tractor (1) and the lower end (11) connected to the hitch. A locking bolt (14) on the hitch projects through the trailer towing bar (15) to lock it in place. The coupling unit allows coupling of single axle trailers to be achieved from the tractor seat without any hand operation.
