The invention is a free-piston internal combustion engine with pressure spaces arranged symmetrically on the outside. Due to the use of a single piston, no synchronisation is necessary. When embodied with a differential piston, the machine can also simultaneously operate as a compressor. The power output is effected via the oscillating-armature generator formed by the piston and the housing.
