The lock unit comprises a rod (1) which is fixed at one end (2). The other end comprises a latch (3) which engages in a bolt. The rod is made of a metal which changes its shape when heated, and has two parts (5,6) programmed to undergo the shape alteration. The one part (5) can be heated by an electric resistance (7). When it is required to open the lock unit, electrical current is fed to the resistance (7), and when the one part (5) of the rod is heated to a specific temp., a curvature occurs in it so that the latch (3) is raised from engagement with the bolt (4). The second part (6) of the rod is programmed so that it changes shape on heating to increase the degree of engagement of the latch with the bolt. Thus, if both parts (5,6) of the rod are heated, the latch (3) remains in engagement with the bolt (4). (Provisional Based advised week 85/34) |
