A prod. having a substantial benzene content is prepd. from normal and slightly branched hydrocarbons by (a) contacting the feed, having a boiling range of 40-200 (esp. 60-120) deg. C, with a conversion catalyst (I) which comprises an intermediate pore size zeolite and pt. cpd., the zeolite being free of acidity; and (b) recovering benzene contg. effluent. Also claimed is a method of upgrading reformer effluent by contact with (I). High-benzene reformate is recovered (from light straight-run naphthas) which need not be fractionally distilled, solvent extracted or dealkylated. In fact, the reformate produced is suitable for purificn. as it is. |
