发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE:To increase a display capacity and to decrease unequal colors by orienting liquid crystal molecules so as to have specific helix angles between substrates and incorporating a dichromatic dye into a liquid crystal compsn. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal molecules are oriented between a pair of the upper and lower substrates 11 and 21 having electrodes 12, 23 for display in such a manner that said molecules have the helix angles in the range of over 90 deg. and below 270 deg.; in addition, the liquid crystal compsn. 33 contains the dichromatic dye. Namely, the angle omega between the preferential orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules at the 1st substrate 11 and the preferential orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules at the 2nd substrate 21 is in a 90<omega<270 deg., more preferably 160<=omega<=260 range and the liquid crystal molecules have the twisted spiral structure at these angles between the two substrates 11 and 21. The angle omega is thus the twist angle determined by the orientation treatment and this orientation control can be executed by known diagonal vapor deposition or rubbing an inorg. or org. film by a cotton fabric or he like after formation of said film. Generation of the unequal colors by the fluctuation in the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is thereby suppressed and the bright display characteristic is obtd.
