The object of the invention is to facilitate and simplify the bursting or breaking of compact materials, in particular rock, masonry, concrete and the like, and to provide light, robust devices which are simple to operate and produce. This problem is solved by the method as described below and sketched in Figures 1 and 2. A recess (1) in the material (2) to be burst or broken accommodates bodies (3) of incompressible, elastic material, and an actuating force reduces the length of the said material, which leads to an increase in diameter and bursting or breaking of the material (2). Figure 1 shows a device with hydraulic application of the actuating force, consisting of a bottom disc (4) in which a connecting member (5) is fastened which passes through body (3) and top disc (6). The hydraulic press (7) is supported on the disc (6). The connecting member (5) passes through the hollow piston of the hydraulic press (7) and is supported on the top end of the piston via nut (8) and disc (9). <IMAGE>
