A driver system for an x-y electrode matrix comprises a substrate (21), on one side of which first switching elements (24) are mounted side by side. On the other side of the substrate, second switching elements (25) are mounted symmetrically with respect to the first switching elements. The terminals of the two types of switching elements are interconnected via substrate conductors (22) and through-holes (23). The first switching elements comprise, for example, integrated transistors for driving the matrix electrodes. The second switching elements comprise, for example, integrated diodes for limiting the current flowing in the electrodes. The driver system can be used, for example, in thin-film electroluminescence displays.
