An isolated workstation (13) or a workstation of equipment (14a-14d) is associated with the workstation of a corresponding local interface unit (18a-18e) made from widely available standard hardware and standard software and connected to a local network (11) in order to be connected up to the control centre (12) for the workshop (10). The workstations of the local interface units are placed in a configuration conforming to a standardised model allowing specific developments to be made within this model. Advantageously, the OSI model of the ISO standard is used to make specific developments in the application layer of the OSI model. The workstation of a local unit can advantageously substitute for the workstation of the associated equipment. <IMAGE>
