Flat layers (20) of fibrous material are superposed on a platen (10), each new layer being needled to the preceding one until the required thickness is obtained, and the distance between the platen (10) and the needles (13) are altered as each new layer (20) is laid on the stack, so as to obtain a substantially uniform needling throughout the thickness of the structure. The platen (10) and needles (13) are mutually moved apart, as each new layer (20) is laid, by a distance equal to the thickness of the needled layer (20). <IMAGE> |
