PURPOSE:To obtain a superior magnetic tape with high strength and low elongation, by forming a magnetic recording layer made of a composition contg. a liq. crystal polymer and ferromagnetic fine grains on a substrate and by interposing a layer treated with a polynuclear metallic complex of carboxylic acid between the substrate and the recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal polymer contg. a compound having properties of a liq. crystal such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid as a comonomer is melt-extruded to form a film. The film is dipped in a soln. of the polynuclear chromium complex of p-phenylenedipropionic acid in alcohol, and it is taken out and heat treated to form a layer treated with the polynuclear metallic complex of carboxylic acid. The treated layer is coated with a layer of a polymer contg. a liq. crystal polymer and magnetic fine grains by melt extrusion. Thus, a magnetic tape having superior characteristics such as about zero coefft. of thermal expansion and moderate flexibility is obtd. The tape has higher heat resistance and higher mechanical strength such as tensile strength than a conventional magnetic tape. The magnetic grains are oriented without requiring any special orientation stage when the polymer is oriented during the melt extrusion. |
