Identification means, particularly plastic cards with memory device, could only hitherto be used in connection with a terminal. For security reasons, the user must key a personal identification number into the terminal which compares it with a stored identification number. The plastic card according to the invention has a keypad by means of which the identification number and other data can be directly entered into the card. The microprocessor with a timer processes these data so that the card itself checks identity, time validity and the maintenance of agreed conditions (credit limits) in each case as a function of time and blocks its use in the case of deviations. To output data, the card has at least one display, a signal transmitter or a loudspeaker which can also be used as microphone for voice output. The card carries out the required arithmetic and memory operations by itself without terminal, and displays the results itself. Since input and output can also be done electronically, however, it is also possible to use it in connection with a terminal.
