PURPOSE:To offer a character and pattern picture image extracting system of a simple constitution, which extracts a character and pattern picture image, executes binary- coding suitable for it to obtain a high quality, in a device for scanning an original in which a variable density picture and a character and pattern picture image are mixed, and binary-coding and reading a luminance level of a picture element. CONSTITUTION:An original 2 in which a variable density picture and a character and pattern picture image are mixed is sent to a read part 3 by 1 line each by a pulse motor 1, and is scanned by an optical system 4. As for detection in this case, a sharp signal by a regular sharp focal picture is inputted to a CCD5. This picture element signal is inputted to a quantizing circuit 6 and is quantized, and Y (i, j) to which a value of a dynamic range of 0-R is given is stored in a line memory 7 in accordance with a main scanning direction (i) and a sub-scanning direction (j). Subsequently, a notice picture element corresponding to the sharp signal, and a 9 picture element area corresponding to an unsharp signal containing said element are set, a luminance level of each picture element is sent to an ROM deciding circuit 8, an absolute value of a difference between a level of the center picture element and a mean level of 9 picture elements is taken, and if it is larger than a threshold level (t), the notice picture element is decided to be a character and pattern picture image component and is outputted. |
