A casting machine for the manufacture of an insulating element, especially a building panel, composed of a cement compound such as cement or plaster, which in a coherent phase encloses hollow polymer grains of low density, comprises a mould 2, 3, which is rectangular and is held with one corner 1 downwards and with the side edges sloping at about 45 degrees to the horizontal. The mould is filled with cement compound from the lowest part of the mould cavity. The fact the mould is made up of two parts 2, 3, which are separated by an essentially diagonal plane from the bottom corner 4 of the mould to top corner 4 thereof, and that the upper mould part 3 is rotatable about a horizontal axis with the top corner 4 avoids problems in making the mould tight, and the cast element is easily removed from the mould. <IMAGE>
