Lifting and towing device with a load pulley, a chain extending around the load pulley, and a brake arrangement for lifting, lowering or towing a load by means of a hook fastened to the load end of the load chain. The device comprises a safety means to prevent dropping of the load. This safety means is in the form of a connection piece (19) for the load chain (15). It is arranged with a second chain link (15d) near an end chain link (15c) at the free end of the load chain (15) along the outside of the end chain link (15c), as a result of which the end chain link bears the portion of a force acting on the connection piece, in order to prevent the connection piece from being excessively deformed and the load chain (15) from dropping down from the load pulley (11). <IMAGE>
