Process and apparatus for drying moist bulk materials

For drying moist bulk materials, the bulk material is heated by means of heat radiation such as infrared radiation, which acts on the surface, smoothed as much as possible, of a stationary charge of bulk material, until the bulk material in the region of this surface has reached a predetermined degree of drying. The bulk material is then turned over and thoroughly mixed to a mass with uniform moisture content, then again allowed to stand, and its stationary smoothed surface is irradiated with heat from heat radiation sources. These two process steps are alternately repeated until the charge of bulk material has reached the desired degree of drying. The process is expediently carried out in a rapidly running mixer such as a ploughshare mixer, in the container wall of which, in the upper region, infrared radiators are incorporated.
