To supply pressure medium to a device for the vertical adjustment of the vehicle as a function of its loading, a partial flow is branched off from the lubricating oil circuit of the vehicle, which is supplied by the customary lubricating oil pump, driven by the internal combustion engine, a higher pressure being established in the branch line and the lubricating oil circuit continuing to be supplied with lubricating oil. Vertical adjustment is performed using the conventional suspension system consisting of steel springs and shock absorbers, the shock absorber part being combined with an additional level control system into which pressure medium at elevated pressure flows when the vehicle is loaded or from which pressure medium flows off when the vehicle is relieved of load. The shock absorber with its level control system is designed in such a way that it has a supporting force corresponding to the relatively low static pressure prevailing in the pressure space and to the corresponding effective surface area. <IMAGE>
