The invention shown in the accompanying drawing reduces the set-up times and simplifies the charging of large vacuum furnaces with a horizontal vacuum chamber. According to the invention, the vacuum chamber consists of a stationary upper portion (2) and one or more, preferably two, lower portions (3,3a) which can be lowered and extended. A change of charge is thus shortened to the time required for raising/lowering and moving the lower portions (3 and 3a). While one charge is in the process another can be prepared. <IMAGE>
