An internal combustion engine working by self-ignition comprises a main combustion chamber formed by a piston recess and a swirl chamber which is arranged in the cylinder head, is of spherical shape, at least in sections of the upper apex area and the lower apex area, and of cylindrical shape in the area lying between the apex areas, the diameter of the spherical apex areas corresponding to the diameter (DK) of the cylindrical area and an injection nozzle being provided in the upper apex area, by means of which the fuel is injected into the swirl chamber. In order to improve the exhaust gas emission and to reduce the fuel consumption, an impact pin having a flattening is arranged in the swirl chamber in a manner known per se, which pin is arranged at a distance (B) greater than 0 and up to 0.2 DK below a horizontal centre plane (C-C) of the lower apex area and at a distance (F) greater than 0 up to 0.2 DK to the side of a vertical centre plane (E-E) in the area of the wall area (WL) and has a diameter (D) of 0.2 to 0.4 DK. The fuel is essentially sprayed at the flattening of the impact pin and the flattening is aligned in relation to the injection nozzle in such a way that the fuel is led into the area of the swirl chamber between the impact pin and the wall area (WL). <IMAGE>
