In a mechanical expansion device, the rolling elements (16) arranged between rings (8, 10) rotatable relative to one another are rotatably mounted in a cage (17) which is connected to the rings by a positively engaging mechanism in such a way that its movement corresponds to the movement of the rolling element upon brake actuation. To simplify the expansion device, the mechanism is formed by a rolling element (23) which serves as a sliding element, reaches through a radial slot (24) in the cage (17) and engages in guide grooves (21, 22) in both rings (8, 10), the guide grooves extending mirror-image fashion at an angle ( beta ) of about 45 DEG to the radial centre line of the slot. <IMAGE>
