There are provided novel metal-free or metal-containing azo dyes of the following general formula: <IMAGE> in which D is an aromatic carbocyclic or aromatic heterocyclic radical, R is H or SO3H, R1 is H or C1-C4-alkyl <IMAGE> in which Y is -NO2, -NH2 or -NHZ and in which Z is a fibre-reactive radical or a non-fibre-reactive carbonyl or sulphonyl radical, with the proviso that the radicals D-N=N- and -OH are in the ortho position relative to one another. Furthermore, a process for preparing the dyes of the formula (1) is provided. The novel azo dyes are highly suitable for the dyeing and printing of textile materials.
