Enteral diagnostic preparations for analysis of the digestive functions comprise a quantity of units up to 5 mm in size, in particular between 0.5 and 1.3 mm and especially between 0.7 and 1.0 mm, each unit comprising a tracer binding agent such as ion exchange resin, with which a radioactive tracer is associated with a half-life of up to 5 days, especially 99mTc, 113mIn, 111In and 129Cs, the tracer binding agent being formulated with pharmaceutically acceptable excipients, especially granulation excipients, in such a way that the contact of the gastrointestinal mucosa with the tracer binding agent is reduced, and that the units do not decay during passage through the gastrointestinal canal. Preferred units contain multi-constituent cores of essentially homogeneous cross-section, in which the tracer binding agent is granulated with one or more excipients, and which may be coated with a diffusion coating, which permits marking of the units at the place of use by immersing the units in a tracer solution. Tracer binding agents are usually present in quantities of 2-20 per cent by weight, in particular approximately 5-10 per cent by weight, calculated on the units. Owing to the low leakage and the absence of decay the preparation can be used to investigate gastric emptying and also the final 20% of a food bolus, cf. Figure 2, which shows the average gastric emptying pattern for 7 healthy volunteer test subjects (A) compared with the gastric emptying from a person with the "watering can" phenomenon. <IMAGE>
