A movable and adjustable clavichord tangent which - in contrast to that fixed in the playing key in the conventional manner - is connected to the key by means of a rotatable pin. During the entire sound duration, it adapts automatically to each string position and key position as it is clamped between these. Irrespective of the relationship of the respective string and key directions to one another, the new tangent always presses the string from the bottom to the top and in no way rubs against the string. The vertical and horizontal starting position of the tangent in relation to the string can be finely adjusted by hand. The unlimited height of the tangent and the optional string direction make possible for the first time the construction of multi-manual clavichords and even clavichords in "grand" form, as a result of which the art of clavichord playing in public receives a considerable boost. In the opinion of the inventor, the new tangent even increases the degree of direct transmission of each touch nuance from the finger to the string.
