An electroluminescent element is specified whose light colours change in accordance with the r.m.s. value or the frequency of applied voltages. The electroluminescent element is provided with at least two types of luminescence centres in a matrix which in each case form dedicated local levels, and has at least two light regions, corresponding to the respective luminescence centres, the characteristics, which represent the relationship between the light intensity and the applied voltage or its frequency, of the light emitted by the luminescence centres being different from one another. These light regions are typically formed from at least two types of activators which are diffused at a respectively different concentration into a single matrix material and are microscopically mixed therewith. The respective light intensity of the light of different colour which is emitted by the respective light region changes as a function of the external voltage or its frequency. The proportion of the light-emitting diode of the respective light colour can thus be controlled by means of the applied voltage or its frequency. In this way, the colouring can be changed.
