This device is part of a complete working cylinder (2) which can hydraulically drive, inter alia, the table plate (1) of a machine tool, in cyclically controlled fashion. It serves as the cover (4) of the actual cylinder body (3) and comprises a cover body (18), a stop bush (19), a control bush (20) and a damping pin (21). The control bush (20) is displaceable and, as a function of its position relative to the damping pin (21), on which it is seated concentrically, controls the oil return flow from the cylinder piston (5). While the piston advances, performing work as it does so, towards the control bush (20), which now projects into the cylinder space and is in its end position, the oil flows under pressure to the reverse side of the piston (5) via the channels (16, 16a, 16b) and flows off from the other side via the control bush (20) and the channels (17, 17a, 17b). When the piston (5) is resting against the control bush (20), it begins to push it into the stop bush (19) and gradually shuts off the flow of pressurised oil, the piston driving ending as a result. The oil return flow is at the same time restricted, giving rise to a damping pressure which brakes the piston (5). <IMAGE>
