A power producing secondary electrochemical cell includes a molten alkali metal as the negative electrode material and a molten nitrate salt as the positive electrode material. The molten material in the respective electrodes are separated by a solid barrier of alkali metal ion conducting material. A typical cell includes active materials of molten sodium separated from molten sodium nitrate and other nitrates in mixture by a layer of sodium beta '' alumina.
