The invention procides a process for regenerating contaminated sulphuric acid using indirect heating in apparatus of, or at least coated with, enamel, characterised in that the contaminated acid, having an input concentration of from 90 to 98.3% by weight of H2S04, is introduced into a purification unit where it is concentrated in a heating zone at temperatures of from 140 to 330.degree.C to a level of at least 96% by weight of H2S04, is subsequently delivered first to a reaction zone and then to an after-reaction zone in which a temperature of up to 330/A is maintained, and the acid is purified in the purification unit as a whole either at normal pressure or under reduced pressure and an apparatus for carrying out the process described above.
