PURPOSE:To prepare phenols, selectively, by adding an alcohol beforehand to the system for oxidizing an aromatic compound with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a boron compound selected from boric anhydride, metaboric acid and orthoboric acid. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of phenols by the oxidation of aromatic compounds with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of one or more boron compounds selected from boric anhydride, metaboric acid, and orthoboric acid, the reaction system is incorporated, prior to the reaction, with <=5.0mol, based on 1mol of the boric anhydride, or <=2.5mol, based on 1mol of metaboric acid and orthoboric acid, of an alcohol, preferably a >=6C higher alcohol, especially an aliphatic alcohol. The objective phenols can be prepared in high selectivity and yield even in the presence of the organic hydroperoxide at a high concentration. |
