PURPOSE:To obtain a high-performance electrode for a fuel cell by mixing a dispersion liquid of catalyst particles and a dispersion liquid of a water-repellent binding agent together with a surfactant, and applying the thus prepared dispersion liquid to a porous base body so as to cause the catalyst particles to be homogeneously dispersed in the surface of the base body. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst particle dispersion prepared by dispersing catalyst particles of platinum or the like carried on carbon powder or the like in water, and an aqueous dispersion of a binding agent such as polytetrafluoroethylene are mixed together with a nonionic or an anionic surfactant. The thus obtained catalyst mixture, while maintaining its dispersion form, is applied to a porous base body made of carbon paper or the like, then dried, thereafter being homogeneously pressed with a roller or the like. Following that, the pressed body is heated in an inactive atmosphere so as to obtain an aimed electrode for a fuel cell. By the means mentioned above, the catalyst particles and the binding agent are prevented from being aggregated, and the catalyst particles disperse and permeate in the base body. Consequently, the life of the performance of the electrode is lengthened. |
