A coding system for applying a destination or function code to a vehicle or other mobile conveyer unit displaceable along a path including a multiplicity of stations designated by respective codes, has a single row of retractable coding members or a single retractable member cooperating with a row of coded members, the vehicle and the coding station being provided with position markers for operating the coding member or members in accordance with the position of the vehicle relative to the coding station.
