PURPOSE:To restrain the generation of smoke by forming a combustion chamber of the shallow and deep tray portions on the top of a piston to inject fuel onto the shallow tray portion in the high load region before fuel is injected onto the deep tray portion to be sparked so that lean premixture is formed. CONSTITUTION:In a fuel injection nozzle 3 and an ignition plug 4 provided to be directed toward a combustion chamber 2 formed of recesses on the top of a piston 1, the combustion chamber 2 is formed of a shallow tray portion 2a and a deep tray portion 2b having smaller diameter near the center of said portion 2a. And before and after an intake valve 5 is closed in high load region of an engine, low pressure fuel is injected from a fuel injection nozzle 3 toward the shallow tray portion 2a as first fuel injection and then when a piston 1 ascends and approaches the upper dead point of compression, high pressure fuel is injected again from the fuel injection nozzle 3 toward the deep tray portion 2b as second fuel injection. On the other hand, in low and medium load regions near the upper dead point of compression is carried out only second fuel injection toward the deep tray portion 2b. |
