<p>Furnace for medium scale carbonisation of vegetable matter working on the downdraught principle burns gaseous reaction products to maintain the furnace temperature at or above that required for carbonisation. The furnace is of double-walled cylindrical construction with combustion of gas occurring in the annulus, causing a downdraught in the central cylinder containing the material to be carbonised. Downdraught may be induced naturally or by blowers; the forced draught version of the apparatus being the more efficient. Used for carbonisation of vegetable matter, e.g. in production of charcoal from wood, corn husks, coconut shells etc.</p> |
