The evaporator comprises a set of vertical panels (3) through which the refrigerant flows. A distribution tank is installed above the evaporator and has a base (17) which is corrugated and arranged so that the upper ridges (18)of the corrugations are directly above a corresponding evaporator plate (3). Inlet nozzles (21) in the base (17) of the tank are positioned normal to the inclined surfaces on either side of each evaporator plate. Jets of water (22) are thus directed onto each side of the plate.
