The filter two strip for producing cigarette filters, is fed past a softener supply device in sliding contact with a catch surface which receives softener which has passed through the tow strip, whereby the tow strip carries away softener received by the surface. To maintain constant the quantity of softener delivered for each unit length of filter strip, the supply device may be provided with a feed device which adjusts the quantity flow of the softener automatically to the quantity flow of the filter tow. The supply device may comprise a spray nozzle which may be associated with a supply of compressed air.
