A length-measuring device has a measuring instrument which is adjoined in an aligned fashion on two opposite sides by closed, elongated guide housing parts for accommodating the displaceable scale. In the region of the free end of one guide housing part, the scale is fastened to a driver which is connected in a driving fashion by means of magnetic force to a traction device which can be moved on the outside of the guide housing part. For this purpose, the limbs of the traction device, which is constructed as a frame, are provided on the insides bearing against the guide housing with magnet elements which form a drive coupling with a permanent magnet present in each case on the driver.
