PURPOSE:To detect the quantity of the motion of a vehicle in a lateral direction by arranging in parallel at prescribed spacings a plurality of detecting means for generating electric signals in accordance with a pictorial image in the fore and aft parts of the vehicle. CONSTITUTION:Sensors 15 and 16 are provided in the fore and aft parts of a vehicle at a prescribed spacing and provided with objective lenses 17 and 18, respectively. A microcomputer reads a vehicle speed by means of a vehicle speed sensor and calculates the time lag between the detections by the two sensors 15 and 16 from the vehicle speed and the distance between the two sensors 15 and 16 in the fore and aft parts of the vehicle. By comparing the levels of a peak signal and of the signals of the elements adjacent to the element producing the peak signal, all the elements belonging to the first sensor 15, and the levels of a peak signal and of the signals of the elements adjacent to the element producing the peak signal, all the elements belonging to the second sensor 16, the quantity of the motion of the vehicle in a lateral direction is detected. |
