A process for preparing an alcohol or alcohols comprises heating a dialkyl carbonate represented by the formula: (R<1>O)CO(OR<2>> wherein R<1> and R<2> each represent an alkyl group, and R<1> and R<2> may be the same or different in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst in an atmosphere of hydrogen to prepare alcohol(s) corresponding to the alkyl groups in the dialkyl carbonate and methanol. According to the process, each of the alkyl components in a dialkyl carbonate can be converted into an alcohol or alcohols. The alcohol may be, for instance, recycled or reutilized in, for example, a process for preparing a dialkyl oxalate. |
