The switch which can be operated thermally comprises an active unit which comprises an element (60) which responds to heat and is a component of a sheath (72) into which electrical heating resistance elements (78, 79) are inserted. Heat is released internally from the sheath (72), while cooling takes place by heat dissipation on the outside of the sheath (72). The element (60) which responds to heat has the shape of a flat plate which can expand in the longitudinal direction. This plate engages with the shorter arm (104) of a lever (100) which is supported such that it can pivot, is bent at right angles and engages via a leaf spring (141) with the operating element (50) of a switch (40) which is to be operated. <IMAGE>
