A power source for wire cut discharge machining applies a pulse voltage which is higher than a discharge voltage and has a pause time between a wire electrode (10) and a workpiece (12), to generate an intermittent discharge therebetween for controlling the pause time or the time during which the discharge current continues in response to the number of repeats of the discharge so as to limit the mean value per unit time of the current flowing between the electrodes, thereby preventing disconnection of the electrode (10) and increasing the machining speed.
