The invention relates to a field of powder substances, in particular to a powder for applying coatings by gas thermal dust deposition. According to the invention, the powder-stabilised zirconium dioxide and a reducing agent - aluminium alloy containing 15 to 50% by weight of magnesium - is proposed, the ratio of the said components in the powder being as follows (% by weight): stabilised zirconium dioxide 65 to 75, aluminium/magnesium alloy 25 to 35. The said powder can be used for applying coatings, in particular heat protection coatings, to various components made of aluminium, cast iron and other metals and alloys, for example to aluminium diesel pistons.
