Process for the preparation of low-molecular-weight olefins

Low-molecular-weight olefins are prepared by catalytic cracking of methanol. The resulting heat of reaction is used at least in part for producing steam. Furthermore, gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons are thermally cracked in a cracking plant operated in parallel and the resulting cracked gas is cooled, likewise producing steam. Before separating the cracked gases, they are compressed to the separation pressure and jointly processed further. The steam obtained in cooling is expanded in a way which produces work, and the energy thus obtained is used at least in part for compression of the cracked gas.
