In a spacer which is used as an aid in the welding of a pipe and a fitting provided with an inner shoulder, in order that the end face of the pipe does not come into contact with the shoulder of the fitting, and which for this purpose is designed as an annular part with flexible projections, a separating slot is provided in the annular part, and an identification strap is fastened to this separating slot, which identification strap projects at right angles from the plane of the annular part and is of such a length that it projects beyond the free end face of the fitting in the inserted state of the spacer.
